Tristan: What’s going on, Living Corporate? It’s Tristan, and I want to thank you for tapping back in with me as I provide some tips and advice for professionals. Today, let’s talk about how you can use some of that holiday money to advance your career.

If you’re anything like me, if anyone asked what you wanted for whatever winter holiday you celebrate, you probably told them just to give you money. Now, if you want to use that money to buy something you’ve had your eye on for a while, by all means, do that because we’ve had a long two years, and you deserve it. But if you don’t have any plans for the money, let’s talk about 3 things you can put that money towards to help you progress your career.

First, you could take the money to upskill yourself through training, certifications, or micro-credentials. Advancing your skillset no longer means you have to enroll in a degree program. Training and certification programs can make you a more marketable candidate. Many online sites, colleges, and universities have begun to offer micro-credentials, which are shorter programs that are narrowly focused on gaining specific skills.

Second, you could spend the money on attending a conference. Conferences are a great way to learn more about your industry and network with heavy hitters in the space and from other companies. You can maximize the networking opportunities and build relationships with people from various companies to potentially land referrals in the future, which can make you 15 times more likely to land an interview.

Lastly, you could spend the money to work with a career coach or get your resume done professionally. A career coach can help you find the clarity you need to get to the next step and help you develop a plan to get there. A professionally written resume can help increase your chances of making it past the Applicant Tracking System and getting in front of a recruiter.

Investing in yourself and your career is always worth it and could really make a difference in your job search and career advancement.
