Tristan: What’s going on, Living Corporate? It’s Tristan, and I want to thank you for tapping back in with me as I provide some tips and advice for professionals. Today, I want to discuss 3 end of the year tips for all professionals.

With the end of the year rapidly coming to a close, now is a great time to set yourself up for success next year. Maybe in the new year you’ll want to land a promotion, get a raise, or find a completely new job . Either way, these tips will help you stay ready so you don’t have to get ready.

First, take some time to update your resume. Believe me, do it now while all of this year’s accomplishments are fresh on your mind. It only becomes more difficult the longer you wait. Start by updating your contact information if your name, phone number, location, or LinkedIn URL has changed. Then move to updating any new skills you picked up or systems you gained experience with. From there, update your job title, company, start and end dates. Within your bullet points make sure to write down all of the results you’ve driven or value you’ve provided your employer. Remember that instead of just focusing on tasks, work on quantifying wherever you can. Things such as metrics, numbers, percentages, and dollars speak louder than just words. Lastly, add any education, training, licenses, or certifications that you may have received that are relevant as they can make you a more competitive candidate.

Next, update and refresh your LinkedIn. If you want to be competitive nowadays, you have to build your professional brand and the easiest way for most professionals to start is on LinkedIn. Take a new headshot, especially if your look has changed. If you don’t have a banner or header image up, choose a photo or create one on Canva to help brand yourself further. Update your summary not only tell a bit of your professional background but to allow people to connect with you and I always suggest ending with a call to action like your website or email address. Very similar to what I said with the resume, add new work experiences and focus on the results and value you bring. Don’t forget about your skills section too as it is a search optimized area of the platform that helps you be found.

Lastly, take some time to reassess and reestablish your goals. We’ve had a crazy couple of years. Many of our circumstances have changed and a lot of us have been rethinking our career pathways and trajectories. The pandemic has forced many of us to reflect on our lives, what we want out of work, the type of work we want to do, and how we want work to make us feel. Take a moment to modify and realign your goals to better fit your current circumstances so you can have clarity on where you want to go next.
