Tristan: Hey, Living Corporate fam. It’s Tristan of Layfield Resume Consulting, and I’ve teamed up with Living Corporate to bring you all a weekly career tip. This week, let’s talk about networking, but in a place where the importance of networking is often underestimated. When we hear “networking,” it usually brings up thoughts of going to events to meet people, but networking happens in many spaces, and one place we tend to neglect is the workplace. There’s so many upsides to connecting throughout your company, so let’s discuss a few. By developing more relationships, you inevitably discover more highly-visible projects throughout the organization. This allows you to strategize on how you can get involved, and you can begin to volunteer for some of the special projects that align with your goals. Second, if you maintain a diverse network throughout the company, you’ll more than likely get the scoop on open positions and departments you may want to work in, not to mention you may possibly get a referral from someone in your network who’s on the team. Next, the more you connect, the more opportunity you have to find a mentor or a sponsor. While a mentor helps you navigate your career, a sponsor uses their agency in the company to advocate for your career progression. If you can land someone who’s willing to be a sponsor for you, be sure to nurture that relationship as they can help open doors within your organization and potentially within others. Finally, if you’re someone who gets anxious about networking, your job can be a great place to start getting comfortable. Think about it. You’re already more familiar with the topics that may come up, and you have to be there for at least eight hours anyway.
